About the album
"Butter" started as a digital single in May 2021, then became a CD single album in July with "Permission to Dance" added as the B-side. Both are written for radio — smooth, brass-led, easy to dance to, deliberately built for the global audience BTS had picked up across Dynamite and Life Goes On.
"Butter" itself spent ten weeks at #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, longer than almost any K-pop release before or since. "Permission to Dance" — co-written by Ed Sheeran — is the song with the now-iconic ASL hand-sign chorus, which is a staple of stadium audience moments.
Sequences for these two in the gallery split predictably: "Butter" gets the gold/yellow palette and tightly-timed cues to the synth riff, while "Permission to Dance" gets warmer rainbows and the slower buildups ARMYs love for sing-along moments.
